Daddy’s Never There

Little girl. 5 years old. First day of school.

Mommy’s there to waive goodbye with tears in her eyes.
He said he’d come but he’s not there, another one of his lies.
Little girl left feeling sad again like she’d been fooled.


“Daddy’s never there.”


New man tries to take his place.
Promises the world, moves them far away.
Looking back part of her still wanting to stay.

Time goes by.
Life seems good to everyone else.
They don’t see the secrets held in this house.
All the bruises Mommy tries to hide and tears running down our face.

She’s all grown up and headed off to prom.
Parents gather to take pictures.
She’s greeted by just her mom.
While the other girls pose with their fathers she sits back and smiles.

Happy as can be. Everything is wonderful until they move in.
